Researching  Asthma and the Influence of Nutritional Supplements (RAINS)

Introduction - Asthma and Nutritional Supplements

In virtually every issue published, prestigious medical journals like the Lancet or the Journal of the American Medical Association are now reporting the benefits of nutritional supplementation.

Hundreds of studies suggest nutritional influences in the reduction of :

  • Heart disease, cancer risk,  birth defects, diabetes, osteoporosis, homocysteine, cholesterol, histamine levels, allergy symptoms and ASTHMA.

The Canadian Asthma Prevention Institute reviewed thousands of peer-reviewed studies on asthma and allergy cases. While most were drug-based investigations, a compelling number suggested nutritional supplementation may result in reduction of asthmatic attacks and allergic reactions.

The "bigger" picture began to emerge as a result of our examination of existing research.

To give you just one example - the current Cox inhibitor drugs used in asthma control target part of a nutritional pathway that leads to inflammation. There are now findings that show nutritional approaches can have the same kinds of influences not only at the same sites targeted by asthma drugs, but, further "upstream" in the nutritional pathways.

The RAINS Study is based on these scientific findings (see Asthma Science Center), combined with results of the Canadian Asthma Prevention Institute's Retrospective Survey (2000) of adult and childhood asthma sufferers who used synergistic combinations of pharmaceutical grade, nutritional supplements (bioflavonoids, essential fatty acids, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants.)

Survey Participants reported:

  • Improvements in existing allergy conditions, asthma wheezing, coughing, recorded Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV1) and Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) rates, and
  • Decreases in asthma medication use, number of common colds (rhinitis), coughing attacks, nocturnal asthma attacks, and heartburn (gastroesophageal reflux; GER, GERD).

This quote is typical of Survey respondents' experiences (See other comments):

"My son is 10 years old. Before (using the protocol nutrients), he was using a variety of medications in an attempt to control his allergy and asthma symptoms. Ventalin inhaler, Vansenase inhaler, Nasalcrom, Flonase, Prednazone  several times a year to help with bronchitis -- which he would always develop when he got a cold --and two allergy shots per week. Within 6 weeks he was off all of his medications, and, with the exception of using his ventalin for one day... has remained off them."

To assess changes in asthma symptoms during the RAINS Study we will use two acknowledged measurements of health:

  • The Adult Asthma Quality of Life  Questionnaire(AQLQ), developed by Professor Elizabeth Juniper, and,
  • The SF-36 Health Survey developed by John E. Ware, Jr., Ph.D.

If you, or your child, suffer from asthma, wheezing, nocturnal asthmatic attacks, allergic rhinitis, dry coughing (not related to a cold) and would like to help test a complementary, safe, drug-free approach to controlling your asthma, please consider becoming a participant.
